FIFA World Cup South Africa starts tomorrow and the opening ceremony is tonight. I don't normally watch soccer, erm, football, but an amazing global event like this, its difficult not to. Like the Vancouver Olympics did for Canada, I think this event will truly unify the people of South Africa, who have endured so much political and racial strife in recent decades. Speaking of Canada, its very cool that the official theme song of the World Cup, Wavin' Flag, is written by Somali-Canadian, K'naan (see the video here). K'naan initially penned the song following the devestating earthquake in Haïti in January. The song is about hope, resilience and coming together in the face of adversity and challenge.

Edit: Wavin' Flag was actually written for K'naan's home country of Somalia and later modified for release as a single to benefit Haïti. Thanks Anon.!

A beautifully shot spread of Karen Elson and Jack White by Annie Leibovitz. Each photo is so rich, dreamy and cinematic and the clothes are perfectly styled by Grace Coddington*. The written piece is mostly about Karen and her first album The Ghost Who Walks (which I'm excited to listen to) and the creative processes leading up to it.

*I watched The September Issue yesterday for the second time..Grace is amazing, she steals every scene she's in.

mon essentiel

I first saw this video when I was in France in 2005 and the song, Mon Essentiel, sung by Emmanuel Moire, has been one of my favorites ever since. The words, the music and the melody are mesmerizing and gorgeous. The video represents the decadence and sensuality of the time of Le Roi Soleil, Louis XIV. And it doesn't hurt that Emmanuel has the most pillowy lips and amazing hair (prob. a wig, but whatevs). The video isn't of the best quality but it was the only one I could find. Enjoy. While the pop music industry has become over saturated with cookie-cutter, contrived acts like The Pussycat Dolls and Girlicious, Lady Gaga has succeeded in establishing herself as a true artist, both musically and stylistically. This video is mesmerizing: the costumery (Alexander McQueen!), the choreography and the music. Not since Madonna has there been an artist so avant-garde and so likely to spark controversy.

AMAZED

A phenomenal concert by a phenomenal artist, Paul McCartney. I feel so privileged to have seen such an amazing show, he can definitely still rock out. I was kind of far away and my photos aren't that great but if you want to see better ones and read a (glowing) review of the show, go here.

I love this song (performed by Robbie Rob) from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (the movie is rad, too). Actually, the whole soundtrack is great. Don't forget to press stop on my iPod playlist before you give it a listen! PS - isn't Keanu such a babe???

The June '09 cover of Interview is one of the most captivating covers I've seen in a while. Björk looks exquisite in a visually stunning black and white cover shot by Inez and Vinoodh. The colorful artwork is from her upcoming album release, Voltaic, and adds an imaginative element to the photograph. I've always been a fan of Björk's musical aesthetic and admired the fact that she doesn't succomb to musical trends like other artists do. I purchased her sophomore album, Post, when I was in junior high (God that makes me feel old) and loved its dreamlike, frenetic flavor... Björk's sense of style can also be described as such.

I will definitely be buying this magazine.

chic peek: The Model as Muse exhibit

The Costume Institute's Model as Muse exhibit opens tomorrow which coincides with tonight's Costume Institute Ball of the same theme (aka the party of the year). I can't WAIT to see what the attendees are wearing, courtesy of style.com tomorrow. Its probably really silly- and kind of sad - that I'm so stoked to see photos of the fab gowns that models, actresses and fashion editors alike will be sporting; so to tide me (and anyone else with similar sentiments) over, here are some photos of The Model as Muse exhibit, set to open tomorrow at the Met and for your viewing pleasure, George Michael's Freedom starring Linda, Naomi, Christy and Cindy.

Ok so I fully admit I don't know half the artists that were at Coachella, however I might have to go next year just to see the amazing display of outfits (and the music...it is all about the music, after all). So much originality, loves it!

Material World

Totally random: I am getting kind of annoyed with no-talent R&B/hip hop/rap/dance music dominating radio stations these days. Don't get me wrong, I would dance or do my work outs to some but generally its all crap. I switched over to a station that plays music from the 60's, 70's '80s (plus a bit of the '90s) and imagine my delight when "Material Girl" by Madonna came on. Much to my boyfriend's chagrin, I HAD to turn it up. I, of course, sang at the top of my lungs and did a little car-dancing. I totally realize that this vintage Madonna is total '80s bouncy pop but it has the staying power that not many of today's songs possess. And who can forget the Marilyn Monroe-esque bubblegum pink gown she wore in the video??

Friday I'm in Love

I'm posting a video of one of my fave songs from the 80's (The Cure, Friday I'm in Love). I adore everything about this video, the crazy hairspray-drenched 'dos, the playing around with costume-y looks, and the makeup! Its kind of sexy in a very odd way. I may be a bit biased, though since I was born in the same decade. Rad, no?



I've never really been one to be truly inspired by music, I don't consider myself a musical person (unless you count playing clarinet from grade 6 to 9, which I don't, I was terrible). One thing I will admit to is being influenced by a musician's style be it hair, clothing, makeup, whatever. Like my taste in music, my taste in clothes varies so much that it goes from Charlotte Gainsbourg to Daft Punk (below).
